HFA COVID-19 Latest Update
Posted Mar 27, 2020

HFA Members,

It has been a couple weeks since we first suspended HFA League play due to the increased proliferation of COVID-19 and we are due for an update so here it goes:

With the City of Houston enacting ever stricter social distancing policies and USSSA (our sanctioning body) also requiring the indefinite suspension of all league play, it will come as no surprise that HFA will be extending its current suspension of play until Friday, April 17th. We are all itching to get league play back online as soon as the city and USSSA indicate that it is safe to resume play and, along with many other soccer organizations, we are hopeful that we will be able to resume games on 4/18 and 4/19.

With that being said, the situation we all find ourselves in is completely unprecendented and we should all be prepared for the fact that there is a real the possibility HFA will be required to further extend the suspension through the end of April. HFA will continue to monitor the situation and will provide another update by Monday, April 13th at the latest. Please note we will reschedule all cancelled matches as soon as possible, but will need first need to confirm our actual return date and once that date has been validated, we will need some time to work with the field coordinators to ensure availability.

Finally, HFA is committed to the health and well-being of its players, team managers, staff, and families. While we continue to actively monitor the situation we strongly encourage players and families to practice repeated and proper CDC hygiene procedures on and off the field, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Don't shake hands during or after a game.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

HFA COVID-19 Update
Posted Mar 23, 2020

In the interest of all HFA members health and safety, effective immediately, the suspension of all league activities until March 31 has been deemed by the HFA Board boh prudent and necessary. This suspension includes all O40, O30 and Regular League games currently scheduled in March. We will be re-evaluating the situation as March comes to a close and hope to have an update soon.

The current plan is to resume league play at some point in April. We are hopeful that we can provide a definitive update and confirm our official return date soon and have tentatively set Friday, March 27th as a date for a formal update so please be on the look out for that update later this month.

Finally, HFA is committed to the health and well-being of its players, team managers, staff, and families. While we continue to actively monitor the situation we strongly encourage players and families to practice repeated and proper CDC hygiene procedures on and off the field, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

ASC Newstars To Compete At The Werner Fricker Open Cup Finals!!!
Posted Jul 10, 2019

Best of luck to ASC Newstars as they represent HFA, Houston, Texas, and Region 3 at the Werner Fricker Open Cup Finals in Baltimore this August. We will all be pulling for you to bring home the Cup!

Many of you may not be aware that each year the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) organizes a competition aptly named the National Cup. This competition is held across four different divisions named the Amateur Cup, the Open Cup (not the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup), the Over30 Cup, and the Over 40 Cup. With the US being so large, USASA has created a two-tiered tournament by splitting the country into 4 different regions; having the best amateur teams play in a regional tournament with the 4 winners going on to compete against each other for the National Cup and the title of best amateur team in the nation!

Region 3 is comprised of 14 states, including Texas, and the top 2 teams from each state can compete in the regionals tournament. Our very own ASC Newstars were one of the top 2 teams that qualified to represent Texas in this year’s regional tournament. This year’s Region 3 Regional Tournament was hosted in Nashville, Tennessee and ASC Newstars competed in the Amater Cup division, finishing second among a field of 16 teams. This second-place finish qualified ASC Newstars for the Werner Fricker Open Cup since Region 3 did not have an Open Cup division at the Regional Tournament this year. Therefore, ASC Newstars will represent Region 3 at the Werner Fricker Open Cup Finals in Baltimore, August 16-18, and they will compete against the 3 top teams from the other 3 regions. The teams that ASC Newstars will be facing are very strong and have a long and rich history in National Cup competitions.

ASC has been involved in many tournaments, all over the country, for the past 45 years. Being a regular particpant in HFA and competing against great teams on a regular basis in one of the best leagues in the country, they have had some exceptional competition to prepare them for the rigors of a National Cup Tournament. The teams that strive to enter and compete in the National Cup need a special kind of year-long commitment from players, coaches, and team owners, all of which can be very difficult and demanding for an amateur team. ASC has a proven a willingness to take on this difficult task and have a consistent winning record to show for all their efforts! ASC can boast numerous HFA League titles and HFA Memorial Cup wins, they have won the Texas State Cup, and represented Region 3 at the highest level many times by winning regionals. Unfortunately, the National Cup, and the title of best amateur team in the country, has eluded them up to this point, but perhaps this year will be ASC’s year to bring the National Cup back to Houston!
